Creativity in semi-legality
The tortuous path of electroacoustic composition in East Germany
Tatjana Böhme-Mehner
The history of electroacoustic music in East Germany is still a terra incognita of musicology. Although it was in the GDR that the first electroacoustic studio of the Eastern Bloc was founded. Just like so many things in the GDR innovative contributions also owe a lot to semi-legal creative work combined with hidden channels to the outside world. The text presents a systematizing overview of the development of electroacoustic music in the GDR until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
