Composing and Thinking, after Royaumont

Jérémie Wenger
Starting with a “fieldwork” experience, namely a visit to the composition sessions “Voix Nouvelles” at Royaumont Abbey, Jérémie Wenger attempts to trace two axes of reflection. On the one hand he casts a critical eye on the three teachers there in 2011: Mark Andre, Brian Ferneyhough and Hèctor Parra, taking into consideration what could be gathered about the atmosphere of the time and about the preoccupations of this temporary community (both on the part of the students and of the professors); and on the other hand, he offers an initial consideration of the work itself and its reception, inspired by spatial concepts, namely a spatialisation within thought itself.
