The heuristic search for gesture in Dieter Roth, Gerhard Rühm and Oswald Wiener – a rarely heard-of musical prank

The ensemble Selten gehörte Music (Rarely Heard-of Music), formed in the seventies around Dieter Roth, practiced and conceptualised instrumental dilettantism. They reproduced musical patterns and clichés that they vaguely remembered. Through this failure the group of artist discovered an innovative musical practice, a unique experimental position that has a singular reach in the current debates around musical gesture.
